James C. Hackstaff

 

Mr. Hackstaff was a co-founder of  Hale Hackstaff Friesen, LLP a 21-lawyer firm prior to forming his current practice, Hackstaff Gessler LLC.  His practice areas include domestic and international commercial transactions, and counsel regarding entity selection, formation, operation and dissolutions. A focus of his commercial practice is the tax consequences and concerns that surround business and personal decisions. He also practices in estate planning, probate; asset protection; real estate development; real estate purchase, sale and financing; nonprofit organization law; and maritime law. Over the last several years he has become an expert in public policy regarding federal and state election laws for for-profit and non-profit entities.


            Jim was born in Denver, Colorado, on October 31, 1956. He has a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Colorado (1979) and a J.D. (1983) from the Georgetown University Law Center. Mr. Hackstaff previously practiced as a Certified Public Accountant and was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Colorado Society of CPAs. Mr. Hackstaff is currently a member of the Denver, Colorado and American Bar Associations.


            Mr. Hackstaff has served on numerous committees and councils of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. He received their highest volunteer award in 1991. He served for five years on the Board of Directors and is currently serving on the Public Affairs Council.

     
  Scott E. Gessler  
   Mr. Gessler concentrates on election law, constitutional law, public policy litigation, campaign finance, non-profit tax law, regulatory advocacy, and commercial litigation. In addition to individual and public official representation, he represents private, non-profit and public entities, and has argued cases before the federal courts, the Colorado Supreme Court and Colorado Court of Appeals.

           Mr. Gessler earned his B.A. from Yale University, cum laude, with majors in History and Political Science, including an interdisciplinary concentration in American politics. He received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, after which he joined the U.S. Department of Justice as a Trial Attorney, focusing on international criminal law and terrorism. He has prosecuted criminal cases as a Special Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and also served as a United States Army Judge Advocate General officer.

           Mr. Gessler also earned an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management. For eight years Mr. Gessler served in management positions in several small companies drawing from this practical experience to include organizational, business and management perspectives in every engagement. As an Army Reservist, Mr. Gessler has served as a Civil Affairs officer overseas in central Bosnia.

           Mr. Gessler is licensed to practice law in Colorado, Illinois and the District of Columbia.

  Hugh C. Thatcher
            Mr. Thatcher represents clients in state and federal courts in a wide variety of civil litigation matters.  He has extensive experience representing clients before the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission, and has counseled clients in several areas of federal regulatory compliance.

          Mr. Thatcher was born in Colorado Springs in 1972.  He obtained his B.A. in Politics from Whitman College, and his J.D. from Vanderbilt University.  Following law school Mr. Thatcher clerked for the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, after which he practiced in the Denver office of Patton Boggs LLP, and the Steamboat Springs office of Sharp, Steinke & Sherman LLC.

  Ann L. West
 

Ms. West’s practice concentrates in representing businesses in a variety of legal matters, including formation, financing, taxation and acquisitions. She has extensive experience in working with high technology companies in particular, although she has worked with business in a variety of fields.


            Ms. West obtained her undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame, with highest honors, in 1994. After graduation, she worked as an auditor in the Denver office of Arthur Andersen LLP as a certified public accountant.


            Ms. West received her legal education at the University of Colorado School of Law (J.D., 1999) in Boulder Colorado. Following graduation from law school, she joined the Boulder office of Cooley, Godward LLP, a large Silicon Valley based firm, and practiced in that firm’s corporate and securities group.

 

Ms. West is active in the Colorado Bar Association as a member of the Law Education Committee and is a member of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association.

John Snow's practice concentrates on estate planning, entity selection and formation, and non-profit tax advice.  Prior to joining Hackstaff Gessler LLC, Mr. Snow served as an employment lawyer with the legal department of the United States Postal Service.

Mr. Snow was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on July 28, 1977.  He earned his B.S., cum laude, from the Pamplin  School of Business at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with degrees in both Finance and Management.  Mr. Snow received his J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law.

Mr. Snow is a member of the Denver Bar Association and the Colorado Bar Association.
